CLASSRoad is happy to present STARTALK 2009, a professional development program dedicated to Content-Based Instruction (CBI) of Arabic as a Foreign Language.

Content-Based Instruction is a powerful means for teaching students a new language. Teachers will gain a deeper understanding of content-area knowledge in Arabic that will enable them to teach these subjects in the Arabic language. Topics span literature, media, culture, arts, and more. 

Through the online lectures, discussion boards, quizzes and practical in-classroom training, the program will equip participants with a deep understanding of Arabic itself, along with technologies, approaches, and resources to enhance their teaching quality, confidence, and performance in the classroom. 

Topics include:

• Using Arabic literature (classical, contemporary, Diaspora, children’s) for content-based instruction

• Implementing content-based instruction of AFL in relation to ACTFL National Standards

• Media in content-based Arabic language instruction

ONSITE Workshop

Top performing students will be selected from the online session to attend the onsite session at California State University, San Bernardino

• Two weeks of onsite training at CSUSB

• Practice teaching in a real-time class room environment of Arabic language students

• Nationally recognized experts with proven experience in teaching Arabic and second language acquisition

• Hands-on techniques that you can apply in your classrooms

• Generous Stipend ($500/person) plus FREE accommodations and food

• Training in the Standards and Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) developed by American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)

• University and Service Learning credit available from CSUSB
